Dear Leggett Valley Unified School District Community, Superintendent Sierra Lahera is currently on a leave of absence. Joanie Potter has agreed to serve as interim superintendent immediately, supporting staff and helping us as we prepare for the start of the school year. Joanie retired from Laytonville Unified School District in 2022 after serving the district for 39 years in various roles, including superintendent. She also served as the LVUSD interim superintendent in the Spring of 2023. On Thursday, August 1, 2024, in a Special Board Meeting of the Leggett Valley Unified School District, board members accepted public comment and discussed possible ways to get students back to school on the Whale Gulch School campus. As a result of the meeting and a unified desire to welcome students back to Whale Gulch School, the board directed district staff to explore insurance options further. Additionally, they instructed staff to devise a plan to open with an alternative learning program that would allow Whale Gulch students to start instruction as planned on August 19 while district staff simultaneously troubleshoot the insurance issue and check out building access options, including the possibility of placing pre-approved DSA buildings on campus. As a next step, Joanie Potter and district staff will work with the Whale Gulch school community as we move forward. Several positive cases have been confirmed among students and staff. We also have confirmed cases of Hand, Foot, Mouth disease in one or more students.
